Karnataka's Mandatory HIV Camps for Students Amid Rising Infections

In Karnataka, a concerning surge in HIV infections among the youth has been reported, with over 7,000 individuals aged between 18 and 25 testing positive for the virus. This alarming trend has prompted the state government to take decisive action by implementing mandatory HIV testing and counselling camps in colleges across the region, including government, aided, and private institutions. The initiative is spearheaded by the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS), which aims to address the growing public health challenge of HIV among young adults. The rise in infections highlights the urgent need for awareness and education regarding HIV transmission and prevention, particularly among this demographic.

Data from the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) reveals that Karnataka ranks third in India for the number of individuals living with HIV, with an estimated 260,000 residents affected by the virus. Out of this population, approximately 205,000 are currently receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). The state has identified a significant number of people who are unaware of their HIV status, with estimates suggesting that around 56,406 individuals do not know they are living with the virus. This lack of awareness is particularly concerning given the rapid increase in HIV cases among those aged 18 to 35, which has surged from 44,500 in 2023-24 to 66,600 in 2025-26. Health officials stress that enhancing awareness about HIV transmission routes is crucial, as many young people remain uninformed about the risks associated with unprotected sexual activity.
