Climate Change Fuels Intensified Wildfires Across Southern Europe

A recent report highlights the alarming increase in wildfire risks across Southern Europe, attributing this trend to climate change. The study, published in the Scientific Reports journal, reveals that the number of summer days conducive to fire outbreaks has more than doubled since 1981. This significant shift in weather patterns has rendered regions like France and Spain particularly vulnerable, with both countries experiencing some of their most severe wildfires on record in recent weeks. The report emphasizes that the rise in fire-prone conditions, characterized by extreme heat, low humidity, and strong winds, is directly linked to global warming, according to co-author Raul Cordero. The current wildfire season in Europe is proving to be exceptionally destructive, surpassing the previous record set in 2025, which was previously considered the worst year for wildfires in the region.

As the situation unfolded, cooling temperatures and rainfall provided some respite to the ongoing blazes in France and Spain. Authorities in France announced that it was safe for approximately 84,000 evacuees in the southwestern part of the country to return home, as the largest wildfire the nation has faced since 1949 began to diminish. Meanwhile, Spain lifted its national emergency status as wildfires threatening areas near Madrid, which have been the most significant since 1961, came under control. However, the threat of wildfires is not limited to these two nations, as rising temperatures have pushed firefighting efforts into Greece, Turkiye, and even the United Kingdom. In Greece, the situation has turned dire, with two firefighters tragically losing their lives on the island of Crete due to the raging fires, which have been exacerbated by strong winds. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned of challenging days ahead as the country battles multiple fire outbreaks.
