Punjab's Anti-Drug Initiative Gains Momentum with Mental Health Fellowship Expansion

The Leadership in Mental Health Programme (LMHP) in Punjab, initiated by the state government in February 2026, marks a significant step in combating substance abuse through a fellowship model. This program, recognized as India's pioneering fellowship aimed at addressing drug addiction, is set to accept applications for its second cohort in early August. Currently, thirteen fellows from the inaugural cohort are actively engaged across Punjab, enhancing mental health services as part of the Yudh Nashean Virudh initiative, which is spearheaded by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. This initiative is a crucial part of the state's broader strategy to tackle the drug crisis affecting its youth and communities.

In a bid to bolster its efforts, the Punjab government is looking to recruit an additional ten fellows along with seven Senior Associates for the upcoming cohort. The goal is to establish a comprehensive network of trained professionals throughout all 23 districts of the state. The LMHP operates under the auspices of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, in partnership with the state’s Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit, ensuring a structured approach to mental health and substance abuse treatment. The fellows participating in this program come from diverse professional backgrounds, including psychology, public health, and social work, and are committed to a two-year term dedicated to supporting the state's anti-drug initiatives.
