As the monsoon season arrives, families across India welcome the cooler temperatures and the joy of splashing in puddles. However, for parents with infants and young children, this time of year also brings a host of new challenges. The increased humidity, damp clothing, and fluctuating temperatures can lead to skin irritations, rashes, and general discomfort for babies. Consequently, parents are becoming more discerning about the products they select and the clothing they purchase for their little ones. This shift in mindset goes beyond merely opting for items labeled as 'natural' or 'chemical-free.' Today's parents are prioritizing transparency in ingredients, scientifically supported formulations, and everyday essentials that are gentle on their child's sensitive skin while effectively addressing the demands of the season.
Dr. Vivek Jain, a Senior Director and Unit Head of Pediatrics at Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, emphasizes that infants require additional skincare during the monsoon due to their skin being thinner and more vulnerable than that of adults. He explains that while the rainy season can provide relief from heat, it can also lead to various skin issues for infants. The heightened humidity and moisture levels can increase the risk of infections, skin irritations, and diaper rashes. Dr. Jain advises that good skincare during this time involves more than just selecting appropriate products; it also includes frequent diaper changes, gentle cleansing, dressing babies in soft cotton clothing, and ensuring proper ventilation at home. He recommends that parents conduct patch tests on new products before regular use and consult a healthcare professional if any redness, rashes, or irritations persist.
