As the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) approaches, millions of taxpayers are hurrying to submit their returns for the assessment year 2026-27, with July 31 marking the final day for compliance. With only a day left, there is growing speculation regarding whether the government will announce an extension for the ITR filing deadline. Historically, the government has occasionally provided extensions in certain assessment years, particularly in response to unique circumstances. However, in recent years, the income tax department has been less inclined to grant long extensions beyond the established due date. Currently, there has been no official communication from the income tax department regarding an extension for the July 31 deadline. Taxpayers are advised to consider this date as the definitive deadline unless a formal announcement is made on the day itself. Tax experts have pointed out that extensions are not guaranteed and have typically been granted only under specific conditions, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, when disruptions affected the ability of taxpayers to file their returns on time. Aman Sharma, a tax consultant based in Delhi, emphasized that without a formal notification from the government, taxpayers should treat July 31 as the last day for filing their returns.
In previous assessment years, the government has extended ITR filing deadlines due to various factors. For instance, during the assessment year 2021-22, multiple extensions were granted as taxpayers and tax professionals faced significant challenges due to the pandemic. Similarly, in the assessment year 2022-23, the deadline for those requiring a tax audit was extended after numerous reports of technical difficulties encountered during the filing process. However, it is important to note that there was no general extension for all taxpayers in the assessment year 2023-24, as the government maintained the original timeline despite expectations for an extension. In the following year, 2024-25, the government did provide additional time for audit reports and audit-linked ITRs, while taxpayers filing belated returns were also granted extra time. Last year, the introduction of new ITR forms and reporting requirements led to a deadline extension, but this year, no such extension has been announced as of now. Taxpayers who need to file ITR-1 and ITR-2, which typically include salaried individuals and those with capital gains, must ensure their returns are submitted by the July 31 deadline.
