E20 Fuel Proven Safe for Over 230 Million Vehicles, Government Reports

In a recent session of the Lok Sabha, the Indian government provided significant updates regarding the safety and economic impact of ethanol-blended fuel, specifically E20. During the discussions, it was highlighted that the use of ethanol has played a crucial role in stabilizing fuel prices amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, stated that the price of ethanol, which is approximately ₹70 per litre, has helped keep petrol prices in Delhi at ₹94.77, a stark contrast to what could have been ₹125 per litre without this intervention. The government also noted that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have absorbed losses totaling ₹21,300 crore due to these price controls, demonstrating a significant commitment to maintaining fuel affordability for consumers during turbulent times.

Furthermore, Minister Gopi reassured the public about the safety of E20 fuel, confirming that extensive testing has shown it to be safe for over 230 million vehicles without causing any abnormal engine damage. He elaborated on the procurement costs for ethanol, which range from ₹71.10 to ₹71.21 per litre for the ethanol supply year 2025-26. The ex-mill prices vary between ₹57.97 for C heavy molasses and ₹71.86 for maize, averaging around ₹66.61. This pricing structure reflects the government's efforts to ensure that ethanol remains a viable and cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels, thereby supporting both the economy and environmental sustainability.
