India's Crude Oil Imports from Russia Set to Surge Amid Supply Challenges

India is poised to significantly increase its crude oil imports from Russia, potentially reaching an unprecedented level of 3 million barrels per day. This surge is largely attributed to ongoing disruptions in global supply chains, particularly through critical maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. According to a recent analysis by Kpler, if these shipping challenges persist, Indian refiners may lean heavily on Russian crude to meet their energy demands. The report highlights that while the Red Sea remains a vital supply channel, the East-West pipeline from Saudi Arabia has been providing a steady influx of crude, averaging between 300,000 to 500,000 barrels per day. However, should the security situation in the Red Sea deteriorate, Indian refiners will be compelled to seek alternative sources to compensate for any potential shortfall in supply.

The reliance on Russian crude oil has become increasingly pronounced for India, with Kpler's lead analyst, Sumit Ritolia, noting that imports could rise to or exceed 3 million barrels per day if market conditions allow. Over recent months, India's imports from Russia have escalated dramatically, climbing from approximately 1 million barrels per day to around 2.6 million barrels per day, with July figures nearing record levels. This shift underscores a significant transformation in India's energy sourcing strategy, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions that have impacted traditional supply routes. Ritolia emphasizes that Russian crude has emerged as a crucial component of India's energy security, with July imports constituting about 55% of the country's total crude imports.
