Manuel Neuer Reveals Plans for Retirement After Bayern Contract Extension

Manuel Neuer, the iconic goalkeeper and captain of Bayern Munich, has recently shared his thoughts on his future in professional football, indicating that he is likely to retire at the end of the 2026–2027 season. At 40 years old, Neuer has been a pivotal figure in the sport and is now contemplating the next chapter of his life after extending his contract with Bayern until June 2027. During a press conference at the club's preseason training camp in Tegernsee, Bavaria, Neuer expressed his anticipation that the upcoming season could be his last as a player. He emphasized that he does not intend to treat the season as a farewell tour, stating, "I don't play the matches just to say, 'This is my last game.'" He acknowledged the reality of his situation, noting, "It certainly looks very much as though I'm going to retire," but he remains focused on the present and the challenges ahead on the pitch.

Despite the looming prospect of retirement, Neuer's competitive spirit remains undiminished. He is eager to add to his impressive trophy collection, which already includes a record-equalling 13 Bundesliga titles. His primary ambition now is to secure a third UEFA Champions League title, a goal he believes is attainable with the current squad. Neuer remarked, "Our goals are all the goals we can achieve. We want to beat everyone, and I believe with this team we have the potential to reach every goal." Bayern Munich is also preparing for the future, with 22-year-old Jonas Urbig being groomed as Neuer's successor. The veteran goalkeeper is taking an active role in mentoring Urbig and collaborating with experienced backup Sven Ulreich, fostering a supportive environment within the goalkeeping unit. Neuer stated, "We'll support one another. We've got a strong goalkeeping squad, including Ulle and the young goalkeepers. The important thing is that we help each other, push each other, and give our best for the team."
