Ashwin Excludes Pant and Shami from India's 2027 ODI World Cup Squad

Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian spinner, has made headlines by announcing his personal selection for the Indian cricket team that he believes should compete in the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. Notably absent from his list are prominent players such as Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Mohammed Shami, and Washington Sundar. This decision has sparked discussions among fans and analysts alike, as these players have been significant figures in the Indian cricket landscape. In a video shared by Cricinfo, Ashwin elaborated on his choices, confidently asserting that players such as Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, and Hardik Pandya should be integral members of the squad. He specifically mentioned Ishan Kishan as the ideal candidate for the role of the second wicketkeeper-batter, suggesting a strategic approach to team composition. However, perhaps the most surprising aspect of Ashwin's selection was the inclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, a pacer who has been out of favor and has not participated in an ODI since January 2022. Ashwin's rationale for this choice centers around Bhuvneshwar's extensive experience, which he believes will be invaluable during the high-pressure environment of the World Cup.

Ashwin expressed his intention to encourage Bhuvneshwar to participate in all available tournaments leading up to the World Cup, emphasizing the need for the veteran pacer to regain his form. He stated, "Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a yes. I would communicate to him, get him to play all the tournaments – first-class cricket, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, everything. And get him primed going to South Africa. I think we would need him there." Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made his ODI debut against Pakistan in January 2013, has played a total of 121 ODIs for India, taking 141 wickets. Despite his absence from the international scene, he remains a prominent figure in the Indian Premier League, where he showcased his skills with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026, finishing as the tournament's second-highest wicket-taker with 28 wickets in 16 matches.
