The Indian Premier League (IPL), recognized as the richest Twenty20 cricket tournament globally, has witnessed a remarkable surge in its business valuation, now standing at an impressive $20.6 billion. This increase, reported by the investment bank Houlihan Lokey, marks an elevation of over 11 percent compared to the previous year, indicating a robust and sustained growth trend for the league. The findings were unveiled in Houlihan Lokey's recent publication, the "2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study," which highlights the IPL's ability to attract significant financial interest and investment. This marks the second consecutive year that the IPL has experienced double-digit growth in its business value, showcasing its resilience and appeal in the competitive sports market.
Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has evolved into a ten-team competition that consistently draws top international cricketers while establishing a lucrative commercial framework. This framework effectively integrates various revenue streams, including broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, merchandise sales, and franchise investments. The recent ownership transitions within the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals franchises further underscore the IPL's attractiveness to major investors. In March, a consortium that includes Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, Aditya Birla Group, and the Times of India Group announced its acquisition of the Bengaluru franchise for a record-breaking $1.78 billion. Additionally, in May, the Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla confirmed their purchase of the Rajasthan franchise for $1.65 billion, highlighting the escalating valuations of franchises within the league.
