India Unveils Hockey Team for 2026 Asian Games with Harmanpreet as Captain

India has officially revealed its 20-member hockey squad for the upcoming Asian Games 2026, which is set to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. Leading the team will be Harmanpreet Singh, a seasoned player who has consistently delivered outstanding performances for the national side. Under his leadership, India clinched a gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 and secured a bronze at the Paris Olympics. This tournament is particularly significant as it will also serve as a qualifying event for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, with the winning team earning a direct spot in the prestigious competition. Harmanpreet will not only take on the captaincy but will also play a crucial role in the defense alongside Amit Rohidas. The goalkeeping duties will be handled by Mohith HS and Suraj Karkera, while veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, who holds the record for the most caps for India, will be pivotal in controlling the midfield dynamics. The forward line will feature Dilpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, and Abhishek, with Shilanand Lakra rounding out the attacking options.

In the tournament, India finds itself in Pool A alongside the host nation Japan, as well as the Republic of Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. The Indian team is set to kick off its campaign against Indonesia on September 20, followed by matches against Sri Lanka on September 22, South Korea on September 24, Japan on September 26, and Bangladesh on September 28. Historically, the Indian men's hockey team has performed admirably at the Asian Games, boasting a record of four gold medals, nine silver medals, and three bronze medals. Their victories have come in various editions, including Bangkok in 1966, Bangkok in 1998, Incheon in 2014, and most recently in Hangzhou in 2023. Hockey has been a staple of the Asian Games since its inception in Tokyo in 1958, showcasing the sport's deep-rooted significance in the region.
