Ex-Captain Questions India's All-Rounder Depth Ahead of 2027 World Cup

Kris Srikkanth, a former captain of the Indian cricket team, has raised concerns regarding the nation’s pool of pace-bowling all-rounders as the team prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup. With Hardik Pandya facing ongoing fitness challenges, the selectors are exploring various players who could potentially fill this crucial role. Among the candidates being evaluated are Shivam Dube, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. However, Srikkanth has expressed skepticism about the capabilities of Dube and Rana, suggesting that they do not meet the criteria of true all-rounders. He specifically pointed out that only Nitish Kumar Reddy could be classified as a 'half all-rounder' due to his ability to bat lower in the order and bowl a few overs, while emphasizing that Pandya remains the only authentic all-rounder in the current setup.

During a recent ODI series against England, Dube was thrust into the spotlight as India’s main seam-bowling all-rounder, filling in for Pandya, Rana, and Reddy, all of whom were sidelined due to injuries. In this series, Dube managed to secure two wickets across two matches with an impressive economy rate of less than five runs per over. However, his batting performance was less than stellar, as he was dismissed for a golden duck in his sole innings. This situation has had a ripple effect on team selection, as Dube's presence in the lineup meant that Kuldeep Yadav was unable to make the playing eleven. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has shown a preference for teams that feature multiple all-rounders, and the lack of available pace-bowling options who can also contribute with the bat led to a compromise in the team’s wicket-taking capabilities, with Axar Patel being the only spinner included in the squad.
