Como 1907 Implements Heading Ban in Youth Football to Protect Young Players

The Italian football club Como 1907 is making significant changes to its youth academy, aiming to prioritize the safety of young athletes by banning heading in football for players up to the Under-11 level. This decision comes after consultations with former professional footballer Raphael Varane, who has experienced the detrimental effects of concussions during his career. Como's initiative reflects a growing awareness of the risks associated with heading the ball, particularly for young players whose bodies and brains are still developing. The club's new policy is not merely a matter of eliminating headers during matches; it encompasses a comprehensive approach that prohibits heading during both training sessions and games for Under-8, Under-9, and Under-10 teams. In addition to this ban, the club has also restructured how throw-ins and corner kicks are executed, instructing young players to keep the ball on the ground rather than sending it into congested areas of the pitch.

Raphael Varane, who concluded his illustrious career in 2024 after successful stints with clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United, has been vocal about the importance of addressing concussion risks in football. His personal experiences with concussions have informed the guidelines that Como is now implementing. Varane stated, “From my experience, when I was 16 I had two big concussions so I was aware of the risk. I had the luck during my career to meet some very specific staff; some medical professionals. I learned a lot from them about the effect of concussion.” His insights have been instrumental in shaping the club's approach to youth training, emphasizing the need for a cautious and informed strategy regarding heading.
