The ongoing ideological clash between the Congress Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a new turn, centering around a controversial remark made by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. An open letter signed by 215 esteemed academics, including numerous vice-chancellors, has publicly condemned Gandhi's reference to Professor V Kamakoti, the Director of IIT Madras, as a 'gaumutra expert' or cow urine specialist. The signatories argue that such language detracts from meaningful scientific discourse and undermines the integrity of academic discussions.

In the letter, the academics highlight Professor Kamakoti's impressive credentials, noting that he holds both M.S. and PhD degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras. With over 150 research papers to his name and involvement in more than 50 research and development projects, he has received numerous accolades, including the DRDO Academic Excellence Award and the Techno Visionary Award from the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association. The letter emphasizes that Professor Kamakoti is a leading figure in India's scientific community, having played a pivotal role in the development of the country's first industry-grade microprocessor. The authors of the letter assert that personal attacks on scholars should be replaced with evidence-based debate and constructive criticism.
