BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi Claims Cow Urine Has Medicinal Benefits Amid Debate

The topic of cow urine, known as gomutra, has resurfaced in political discussions following claims made by BJP Member of Parliament Sudhanshu Trivedi regarding its medicinal properties. Trivedi asserted that cow urine possesses antibacterial and antifungal qualities that have gained international recognition. His comments came in response to a critique from Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who had previously mocked IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti for his inclusion in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's task force on exam reforms, referring to him as a 'gaumutra expert.' In defending the use of cow urine, Trivedi stated, 'Those who have a problem with gomutra should know that its antibacterial and antifungal medicinal properties have been patented in the United States and the United Kingdom. Those whose minds are filled with the ‘dung of Macaulay and Marx’ will never understand this.' This bold statement has reignited interest in the scientific community regarding the actual medicinal benefits of cow urine.

A number of studies published in reputable peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Veterinary Public Health and the International Journal of Cow Science, have investigated the properties of cow urine and its distillate in controlled laboratory environments. Researchers have observed that cow urine distillate exhibits antimicrobial activity against specific bacteria and fungi. For instance, studies employing standard agar diffusion techniques have reported the inhibition of microorganisms like Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus, along with various fungal species, including Aspergillus. One notable study conducted by scientists affiliated with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) resulted in a US patent (US6410059B1) that recognized cow urine distillate as a “bioenhancer,” a substance that could potentially enhance the effectiveness of certain medications. The findings indicated that cow urine distillate might improve the transport of certain antibiotics and antifungal drugs across cell membranes, thereby increasing their efficacy at reduced dosages.
