Voting Underway in Bankipur Bypoll; Prashant Kishor Makes Electoral Entry

Polling for the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar commenced at 7 AM on Thursday, with stringent security measures in place to ensure a smooth electoral process. Approximately 380,000 voters are eligible to participate in this crucial election, which features 26 candidates vying for the seat. Among them is Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, who is making his electoral debut. The voting period is set to last until 6 PM, according to a senior official from the Bihar Chief Electoral Officer's office. The results will be tallied on August 3, marking a significant moment for all candidates involved.

This by-election has garnered considerable attention, particularly due to Kishor's background as a prominent election strategist. He has previously worked on various campaigns before establishing his own political party a few years back. This contest is particularly noteworthy as Kishor is challenging the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a constituency that has historically been one of its strongholds. The need for this bypoll arose after Nitin Nabin, the BJP's national president, vacated the Bankipur seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha in April. Nabin had secured the seat for a fifth consecutive term during the November Assembly elections, defeating his nearest rival, Rekha Gupta from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), by a margin exceeding 50,000 votes.
