This decision comes in the wake of a controversy where a post by the Prime Minister was temporarily removed from Facebook. According to sources, the social media giant communicated with the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), detailing the new measures that have been put in place to ensure that posts from prominent figures receive extra scrutiny. The company has assured that senior officials will conduct multiple levels of checks before any content is published, thereby enhancing the reliability of the platform for significant communications from leaders.

The incident that prompted this response occurred when Prime Minister Modi shared a video post aimed at engaging the youth of India, addressing issues surrounding paper leaks in examinations. This post, which was initially shared on Instagram before being cross-posted to Facebook, was briefly restricted due to what Meta described as a technical glitch. Following the incident, the Indian government summoned a senior Meta executive to discuss the matter. IT Secretary S. Krishnan expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation provided by Meta, stating that while the company had acknowledged its mistake, the rationale behind the removal was deemed insufficient. The Ministry is seeking further clarification on how such an error could occur, particularly given the importance of the content in question.
