Bombay High Court Postpones Nitin Gadkari's Defamation Case Hearing

The Bombay High Court has decided to postpone the defamation lawsuit filed by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, with the next hearing scheduled for August 5. During the proceedings, the legal representative for Google informed the court that the tech giant had not received the necessary legal documents pertaining to the case. Gadkari's lawsuit stems from allegations of a coordinated effort to tarnish his reputation through misleading social media posts and deepfake technology that falsely associates him with the E20 ethanol-blended fuel initiative. He is seeking court orders to have the allegedly slanderous material removed from various digital platforms. Additionally, the Minister is pursuing damages amounting to Rs. 11 crore, asserting that the viral nature of the content has caused significant harm to his public image. The court has instructed Gadkari's legal team to ensure that copies of the petition are delivered to all relevant parties involved in the case.

The controversy at the heart of this legal battle is centered around the Indian government's initiative to promote E20 fuel, a policy spearheaded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This flagship program aims to reduce the nation's reliance on imported crude oil, decrease vehicular emissions, and stimulate the demand for domestically produced ethanol. Gadkari has expressed that the online posts in question misrepresent the policy, suggesting that it serves his personal interests rather than the broader public good. He contends that the assertions made in these posts are entirely false and have been exacerbated by the use of manipulated and AI-generated imagery, which misleads the public regarding the nature and intent of the E20 fuel policy.
