UGC Approves One-Year PG Programs via Online and Distance Learning

In a significant move aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), the University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted permission for universities and colleges to introduce a one-year postgraduate program for students who have successfully completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with Honours. This initiative allows institutions to offer these programs through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online formats, expanding educational opportunities for a broader range of learners. According to the official announcement, only those colleges or universities that are already recognized by the UGC to provide a two-year postgraduate program in the same field will be eligible to implement this new one-year option.

The UGC's notification emphasizes that the new postgraduate programs must adhere to the guidelines set forth by the NEP 2020, as well as comply with existing UGC regulations and the norms established by relevant regulatory bodies. Institutions must ensure that they meet the necessary credit requirements and obtain approval from the appropriate statutory bodies within the higher education institution (HEI) before launching these programs. Additionally, the notice specifies that admissions will be limited to candidates who meet the established eligibility criteria, which includes the successful completion of a four-year Bachelor's Degree with Honours. For specialized programs such as MBA, MCA, and PGDM, the entry requirements will align strictly with the stipulations set by the respective regulatory authorities.
