Government Assures E20 Petrol Safe for Older Vehicles Amid Concerns

As discussions intensify regarding the effects of E20 petrol on the performance and durability of vehicles, the Indian government has stepped in to address these concerns. On Thursday, the Centre released a statement asserting that thorough research and practical data have not revealed any signs of corrosion, unusual wear, or a decrease in the lifespan of vehicles, including older models that were not initially approved for E20 fuel usage. This response aims to reassure vehicle owners who may be apprehensive about the implications of using this higher ethanol blend in their automobiles.

In a detailed response presented in the Lok Sabha, Suresh Gopi, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, highlighted that extensive laboratory tests and field evaluations conducted by various reputable organizations, including the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), have confirmed the safety of E20 fuel when utilized according to established guidelines. The studies examined a range of factors such as engine longevity, drivability, ease of starting, resistance to corrosion, compatibility of materials, emissions, and fuel efficiency. Gopi emphasized that the comprehensive research and real-world experiences have not indicated any significant negative impact on vehicle performance due to the use of E20 petrol.
