Government Assures E20 Fuel Safe for Older Vehicles in Rajya Sabha

On Wednesday, the Indian government reassured members of the Rajya Sabha that extensive research has shown that E20 fuel, which contains 20% ethanol, does not adversely affect the performance of vehicles, including older models. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, provided this information in a written response, emphasizing that the studies conducted by prominent organizations such as the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) confirmed that vehicles using E20 fuel did not demonstrate any significant changes in performance or unusual wear and tear. The findings also indicated that there were no issues related to drivability, startability, or compatibility with metals and plastics. Furthermore, emissions from BS-VI compliant vehicles remained within the prescribed limits when tested with E20 fuel.

Gadkari further clarified that the research did not suggest any modifications to the engines of cars or two-wheelers for compatibility with E20 fuel. However, it was noted that certain BS-III vehicles manufactured between April 1, 2005, and 2016 might need the replacement of specific rubber components and gaskets, which can be addressed during regular vehicle maintenance. The minister also tackled concerns regarding fuel efficiency, stating that mileage is influenced by various factors beyond just the fuel type. These factors include driving habits, tire pressure and alignment, maintenance practices like timely oil changes and air filter replacements, as well as the use of air conditioning. Experts from the automobile industry and vehicle testing agencies have reiterated that these aspects significantly impact fuel economy.
