Sony Raises PS5 Prices in India by ₹15,000 Amid Global Increases

Sony has officially increased the price of its PlayStation 5 (PS5) in India, marking a significant change in the gaming console's market positioning. The disc-based Standard Edition is now priced at ₹69,990, a substantial rise from its previous price of ₹54,990, representing an increase of ₹15,000 or nearly 28 percent. This adjustment aligns India with a broader trend where Sony has been raising prices for the PS5 across various international markets over the past year. The announcement of this price hike was initially hinted at by tipster Vinayak Soni on social media platform X, where he shared an image of a retail box displaying the new maximum retail price (MRP). This information was later confirmed by Sony's official ShopAtSC store, although the console is currently out of stock. The digital edition of the PS5, which does not include a disc drive, is not listed on the site, leaving its new price in India unverified for the time being.

The implications of this price increase are significant and extend beyond mere numbers. At the new price point of ₹69,990, the Standard Edition of the PS5 is now nearly on par with the launch prices of the PS5 Pro, which was considered a premium offering when it first hit the market. This shift indicates a notable change in how consumers will perceive the value of the PS5, as the base model now occupies a price range that was once reserved for higher-end options. This is not the first instance of price adjustments affecting Indian consumers; last July, Sony raised the price of the PS5 Digital Edition from ₹44,990 to ₹49,990, a ₹5,000 increase, while the Standard Edition remained unchanged at that time.
