On Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games 2026, Indian athletes showcased remarkable performances, highlighted by Murali Sreeshankar's impressive long jump that earned him a silver medal, marking his second consecutive medal in this event. Sreeshankar achieved a personal best jump of 8.09 meters, reinforcing his status as a top competitor in the long jump category. His achievement is particularly significant as he becomes the first Indian athlete to secure back-to-back medals in this discipline, having previously won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. This accomplishment not only adds to his personal accolades but also enhances India's reputation in track and field events on an international stage.
In addition to Sreeshankar's success, the day was historic for Indian para athletics, with a groundbreaking one-two finish in the men's 100m T47 event, which is specifically for athletes with upper-limb impairments. Dilip Mahadu Gavit clinched the gold medal with a time of 10.71 seconds, while his compatriot Mohammed Basil followed closely behind, securing the silver with a time of 10.83 seconds. This achievement marks a significant milestone for India in para athletics, showcasing the growing talent and competitive spirit among Indian athletes. With these two medals, India has now accumulated a total of 15 medals at the Games, comprising 3 gold, 9 silver, and 3 bronze, positioning the nation in eighth place overall in the medal standings.
