Hockey India Unveils Saffron Jerseys, Sparks Controversy Among Fans

In a surprising move, Hockey India has decided to replace the traditional blue jerseys worn by both the men's and women's teams with new saffron uniforms, just ahead of the upcoming World Cup. This shift marks a significant departure from the long-standing identity associated with Indian hockey, which has been characterized by its blue color. The governing body announced this change through a brief video on X, previously known as Twitter, emphasizing that the saffron hue represents courage, sacrifice, and victory. The new design draws inspiration from the Indian national flag and symbolizes fresh beginnings for the teams as they prepare for the international stage.

The newly designed jerseys also incorporate a mandala pattern, celebrating India's rich cultural heritage, alongside blue accents inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, which signifies progress, peace, and focus. Additionally, the graphics on the chest feature a modern interpretation of the Sudarshan Chakra, representing strength, unity, and momentum. The jerseys are further adorned with tricolor piping along the shoulders, a nod to the national flag that aims to reinforce a sense of national pride. The name 'India' is displayed in a stylized Devanagari script, highlighting the country's linguistic and cultural diversity. However, this bold decision has not been without its critics, particularly from former Indian men's hockey captain Viren Rasquinha, who expressed his discontent with the change.
