Supreme Court Delays Hearing in Peacock Idol Theft Case Involving Venu Srinivasan

The Supreme Court of India has postponed the hearing regarding the peacock idol theft case linked to Venu Srinivasan, a prominent figure associated with the Tata Group, to August 5, 2026. This case revolves around the alleged theft of a valuable peacock idol from the historic Kapaleeswarar Temple located in Chennai. The complainant has raised serious allegations, claiming that during renovations in 2004, the original antique idol was replaced with a counterfeit version. Srinivasan, who has been implicated in this controversy, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. His involvement in this case stems from a complaint that led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) in 2018, which has since sparked significant legal scrutiny.

Venu Srinivasan holds several influential positions, including serving as a non-executive director of Tata Sons, as well as being a life trustee and Vice Chairman of several major Tata Trusts. Additionally, he is recognized as the Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company. His contributions to the automotive industry have been notable, particularly in elevating the TVS brand to international prominence. In earlier court proceedings, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani raised concerns regarding the substantial delay between the alleged theft and the subsequent filing of the FIR. He pointed out that while the supposed incident occurred in 2004, the FIR was not lodged until 2018, leading to questions about the validity of the claims due to the fourteen-year gap. Jethmalani argued that such a delay could significantly undermine the credibility of the allegations against Srinivasan.
