Government Denies Allegations of Force Against Student Protesters

On Wednesday, the Indian government addressed the Lok Sabha regarding the events that unfolded during the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests on July 20. Union Minister Jitendra Singh firmly stated that no live ammunition was used against the student demonstrators, asserting that only tear gas was deployed to manage the situation. This clarification came in response to accusations from opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had authorized the use of lethal force against the protesters. Singh emphasized that the decision to use force lies with a magistrate, not a minister, thereby refuting the allegations made by Gandhi. He reiterated that the government had consistently maintained that no shots were fired during the protests, which undermines the basis of the opposition's claims.

The debate in the Lok Sabha intensified as Rahul Gandhi voiced his concerns, questioning the absence of the Home Minister during the discussions. He accused Amit Shah of lacking the courage to face the parliament and suggested that the Home Minister was afraid to confront the allegations regarding the violent crackdown on students. Gandhi's remarks included serious accusations, stating that the Home Minister had ordered security forces to shoot at the protesters, which he described as an egregious act against the youth of India. He insisted that the authority to authorize such forceful measures rests solely with the Home Minister or the Prime Minister, thereby placing the responsibility squarely on the government’s leadership.
