Suvendu Adhikari Addresses Controversy Over School Meal Changes in Kolkata

In a bid to clarify the recent controversy surrounding the provision of mid-day meals in Kolkata schools, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the media on Wednesday, emphasizing that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) will be responsible for supplying nutritious meals. He assured that while ISKCON will provide 'satvik' meals, eggs will still be available separately through self-help groups (SHGs) to ensure children receive adequate protein in their diets. This announcement comes as a pilot project set to commence on August 1, aiming to enhance the nutritional quality of meals offered to students in various parts of Kolkata.

The decision to involve ISKCON in the meal provision process had raised eyebrows and sparked concerns among various stakeholders, including opposition leaders. Critics, including former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, voiced their apprehensions about the potential exclusion of eggs from the meal offerings, which are considered a vital source of protein for growing children. They argued that the initiative could inadvertently deprive students of essential nutrients. The opposition has also suggested that this move reflects a broader agenda by the BJP-led government to promote vegetarianism among the youth, raising questions about dietary choices in public schools.
