Gitanjali J. Angmo, the wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, made a heartfelt appeal on social media for empathy towards her husband, who recently concluded a 26-day hunger strike. In her message posted on X, she urged the public to refrain from harsh criticism and instead show understanding for the sacrifices he made during this challenging period. Angmo emphasized that Wangchuk's fast was undertaken for a cause greater than himself, and she implored critics to consider the gravity of his actions before passing judgment. She stated, “Before you rush to criticise @Wangchuk66, first pause to earn the ethos of fasting for 26 days for a cause larger than yourself.” Her words reflect the emotional toll that such a commitment can take on an individual, especially when it involves significant personal sacrifice.
Wangchuk is currently recovering in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where he is being closely monitored after losing 11 kilograms, including muscle mass, during his fast. Angmo shared that her husband’s decision to undertake such a drastic measure was rooted in his dedication to advocating for students affected by the alleged NEET examination paper leak. She remarked, “He lies in the ICU today, having lost 11 kg, including muscle mass, because he chose sacrifice over comfort. The least we can offer him is a day of compassion before burdening him with our own expectations and political calculations.” This appeal for kindness comes at a time when public figures often face scrutiny and backlash for their actions, particularly when they involve political activism.
