Maharashtra Abolishes One-Year Bond Service for MBBS Graduates

In a significant policy shift, the Maharashtra government has officially abolished the mandatory one-year bond service requirement for MBBS graduates from government-funded, aided, and private medical colleges. This decision, which has been confirmed by the Press Trust of India (PTI), comes in response to the limited availability of positions for these graduates in public health institutions. Previously, newly graduated MBBS students were obligated to serve for a year in government hospitals, rural health centers, or other public healthcare facilities. However, due to the disparity between the number of graduates and the available positions, the government has decided to roll back the Social Responsibility Service (Bond Service). A Government Resolution (GR) issued on July 23 clarified that only those graduates who had already commenced their bond service prior to the issuance of this GR would still be required to fulfill this obligation.

The rationale behind this decision is rooted in the increasing number of medical colleges in Maharashtra, which has led to a surge in the number of graduates each year. The GR highlighted that the limited number of positions available in various government departments to accommodate these graduates makes it impractical to enforce the bond service requirement. As a result, many eligible candidates have found themselves unable to meet the admission criteria for postgraduate medical courses due to their incomplete social responsibility service. The GR pointed out that graduates often complete this service merely to qualify for postgraduate studies, which detracts from their ability to provide effective medical services during their designated postings. The GR also noted that since these graduates have just completed their MBBS training, they may lack the necessary experience to handle emergency medical situations competently.
