Bengaluru Teen Attacked After NEET Protest Participation

A 19-year-old student in Bengaluru was reportedly assaulted on the night of July 30 by four masked individuals after he participated in protests regarding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy. The incident occurred near BEL Circle in Jalahalli, where the victim was taking a stroll following dinner. According to his complaint, which was later reviewed by CNN-News18, the attackers approached him on a motorcycle, verbally harassed him, and posed a provocative question: "Do you want Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign?" This confrontation escalated into a physical assault, with the assailants striking him on the leg with a wooden log before fleeing the scene, leaving him with a serious injury.

The victim, who is affiliated with a student organization, has since filed a complaint at the Jalahalli Police Station. Law enforcement officials have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and have begun an investigation into the assault. This incident follows a series of protests that have taken place in Bengaluru and other locations, driven by concerns over the integrity of the NEET-UG examination process. The protests were notably led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has been vocal about the need for accountability in educational assessments. The demonstrations gained significant traction, culminating in a major event at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, where protestors demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The protests, which began in late June, were significantly bolstered by the involvement of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who initiated an indefinite hunger strike to advocate for broader educational reforms and to call for Pradhan's resignation. The situation intensified on July 20, coinciding with the commencement of the Parliament's monsoon session, when the CJP organized a 'Sansad Chalo' march. Thousands of students from across the nation joined the movement, braving adverse weather conditions and police barricades to voice their demands. This mobilization marked one of the largest street protests during Prime Minister Modi's current term, ultimately leading to Pradhan's resignation and the government's pledge to implement reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in competitive examinations.
