Evo Morales Faces New Arrest Warrant Amid Ongoing Protests in Bolivia

A Bolivian court has recently issued a new arrest warrant for Evo Morales, the former president of the country. The Santa Cruz district prosecutor’s office has indicated that Morales is under investigation for serious charges, including armed uprising against the state, terrorism, and endangering public safety. These allegations stem from his support of protests that erupted in June, led by farmers and truckers who were reacting to an economic crisis characterized by soaring living costs and the austerity measures implemented by conservative President Rodrigo Paz. In response to the legal actions against him, Morales took to social media platform X, asserting that the government is attempting to intimidate him to distract from the severe economic and social challenges currently facing Bolivia. He described the situation as a crisis that has left the populace abandoned and has allowed corruption to thrive.

Evo Morales, who made history as Bolivia's first Indigenous president, has had a tumultuous political career marked by significant achievements and controversies. He served three terms from 2006 until his controversial resignation in 2019, which was precipitated by allegations of electoral fraud. Despite initially resisting calls to step down, he ultimately left office, casting a long shadow over nearly 14 years of economic advancement and poverty alleviation, which were often marred by accusations of authoritarianism. Following his ousting, Morales sought refuge in Mexico and later in Argentina, returning to Bolivia after his political ally, Luis Arce, secured the presidency. However, in late 2024, serious allegations emerged against him involving the trafficking of a minor and statutory rape, which he has vehemently denied. As protests erupted across the nation in early 2025 in response to these charges, Morales’s supporters took drastic measures, including road blockades, which effectively paralyzed the country.
