On the occasion of World Infertility Day, healthcare providers are emphasizing the importance of recognizing infertility as a shared concern that necessitates equal involvement from both partners. For years, societal norms and cultural stigmas have unjustly placed the burden of infertility on women, which can hinder timely diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Monika Gupta, the Center Head at Kailash IVF in Noida, states, "A couple embarks on their journey to parenthood together, and both partners should receive equal attention from the outset." It is crucial to understand that a man's outward appearance of health, regular exercise, or previous fatherhood does not guarantee normal fertility. Male fertility is influenced by several critical factors, including sperm count, motility, and morphology. Any irregularities in these areas can significantly diminish the likelihood of natural conception. Dr. Gupta elaborates, "The quality of sperm is determined by various factors such as count, movement, and shape. We refer to these parameters as sperm concentration, motility, and morphology. In simpler terms, there must be an adequate number of sperm, they should be capable of moving towards the egg effectively, and they must possess the appropriate structure to facilitate fertilization." A standard semen analysis is typically the initial step in assessing male fertility, but experts highlight that fertility testing has evolved considerably beyond merely counting sperm. One critical aspect is DNA fragmentation, a condition where the genetic material within the sperm is compromised. Even if sperm appears normal under microscopic examination, damaged DNA can result in poor fertilization, hindered embryo development, recurrent miscarriages, and decreased success rates in IVF procedures. Additionally, doctors may explore other underlying issues that could contribute to infertility. Male involvement becomes even more crucial when couples pursue In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). One of the most effective methods for addressing severe male infertility is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). This advanced IVF technique involves the precise injection of a single healthy sperm directly into an egg, significantly enhancing fertilization rates for men with low sperm counts or poor motility. ICSI has revolutionized fertility treatments globally, offering hope to countless couples who previously faced limited prospects of conception. Experts contend that the most significant barrier to addressing infertility today is not medical, but rather social. Many men are reluctant to undergo fertility testing due to stigma, embarrassment, or the misconception that infertility is primarily a female issue.
