For many years, organizations believed they had discovered the secret to fostering happier employees. The typical approach involved offering flexible working hours, enhancing workplace culture, implementing wellness initiatives, and organizing team-building activities. Initially, these strategies seemed effective, as studies indicated that employees reported higher levels of satisfaction with their jobs compared to previous years. However, a significant shift has occurred: employees are now increasingly reluctant to exert additional effort beyond their defined roles.
A recent report from Great Place To Work India 2026 has coined the term 'effort recession' to describe this emerging trend in workplaces. The report clarifies that employees are becoming less inclined to engage in tasks that exceed their job descriptions. Actions such as staying late to complete a project, stepping outside their designated roles to address issues, or volunteering for extra responsibilities are becoming increasingly rare. The survey, which included responses from 380 organizations across India, revealed that 63% of these companies have noticed a decline in employees' willingness to go the extra mile over the past year. On average, the discretionary effort among employees has decreased by 5%, continuing a downward trend that has been evident since 2023.
