Qualcomm Announces Price Hike for Snapdragon Chips Starting September 1

Qualcomm has officially announced an increase in prices for its Snapdragon chip lineup, a move that coincides with the anticipated launch of the next generation of premium Android smartphones. The company communicated this decision to its customers through a formal notice, indicating that prices for most Snapdragon chips will rise by double-digit percentages for shipments made after September 1. This announcement was confirmed by Qualcomm's CEO, Cristiano Amon, during the company's fiscal Q3 2026 earnings call, where he stated, "Cost went up, prices are going to go up." Amon further elaborated, explaining that the increase in costs necessitates a corresponding rise in prices, as the company strives to enhance supply-chain efficiency amidst these challenges.
The primary driver behind this price increase is a shortage of memory chips, but the situation is more nuanced than a simple supply shortage. Major memory manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have been reallocating their production capabilities to focus on high-bandwidth memory that caters to AI servers, which offer significantly higher profit margins compared to consumer-grade memory. According to data from Bloomberg Intelligence, the demand for data centers accounted for nearly half of the global DRAM consumption in 2025, a significant increase from about one-third five years prior. This shift means that the memory resources that would typically be allocated to smartphones and other consumer electronics are being diverted to support the burgeoning AI infrastructure, thereby exacerbating the supply issues faced by companies like Qualcomm.
