Alexandr Wang, the head of Meta's AI division, recently expressed optimism about the current landscape for startups, suggesting that the integration of artificial intelligence could mark a transformative period for emerging companies. Speaking at a Y Combinator event, Wang emphasized that this moment represents a unique chance for entrepreneurs to realize their visions and ambitions. He stated, 'It's probably a once-in-a-civilization opportunity to be a dreamer and to have a vision and to have ambition and to impose a view of how the future world should look by building something amazing.' His remarks highlight the potential for innovation and growth in the startup ecosystem, particularly for those willing to embrace AI technologies.
Wang, who has an extensive background in AI, including founding Scale AI, a pioneering data labeling company, noted the challenges he faced when he began his journey in AI training back in 2016. Scale AI has played a crucial role in the development of AI by employing thousands of contractors worldwide to assist in filtering, ranking, and training AI responses for major tech firms. In June 2025, Wang transitioned from his role as CEO of Scale to lead Meta's Superintelligence division, a move that came as part of a significant $14.3 billion deal between Meta and Scale. His experience in the industry has provided him with valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of competition among startups and established companies.
