Myanmar Activists Sentenced to 37 Years for Election Protest

In a significant legal ruling, a Myanmar court has imposed lengthy prison sentences on nine activists for their involvement in a protest advocating for a boycott of the elections held in December. Reports indicate that eight of these activists, including well-known figure Htet Myat Aung, received sentences of 37 years each from two separate courts in Mandalay. This decision was made public by an activist organization, which highlighted the severity of the penalties as part of a broader crackdown on dissent against the military regime. The ninth activist was handed a slightly lesser sentence of 27 years, also under charges related to counterterrorism laws. The convictions stemmed from the activists' participation in a demonstration that took place on December 4, the day after they organized a flash protest in downtown Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city.

The protest was aimed at encouraging citizens to abstain from participating in the elections scheduled between December 25, 2025, and January 25, 2026, and to oppose mandatory military conscription. Additionally, the demonstrators called for the release of political prisoners who have been detained since the military coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. May Hnin, a spokesperson for the Anti-Junta Forces Coordination Committee-Mandalay, expressed her belief that the military's actions were intended to instill fear among the populace and reinforce its grip on power. She stated, "These sentences are proof that a government that came to power through a sham election can never establish a federal democratic system." Despite the harsh sentences, the activists have chosen not to appeal, as they feel that the judicial system is unlikely to provide them with a fair chance of overturning the verdicts.
