Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition figure in Uganda, has been hospitalized in critical condition following a collapse during a court appearance on Wednesday. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, reported that he is currently in an unresponsive state, unable to communicate. Besigye, who has been incarcerated since late 2024 on charges of treason, was seen falling in the courtroom while protesting the lack of legal representation of his choice. Byanyima, who also serves as the head of UNAIDS, expressed deep concern over her husband's health and has called for his transfer to a private medical facility for specialized care. She indicated that the family does not trust the public hospital, Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he is currently being treated. Reports from Al Jazeera highlight the family's frustration over the court's refusal to grant permission for the transfer, emphasizing the urgency of Besigye's condition. Byanyima stated, "[Besigye’s] family is saying he needs special treatment and they do not trust the government hospital." This situation has raised alarm among supporters and rights activists who are concerned about the political implications of Besigye's detention and health crisis.
The circumstances surrounding Besigye's collapse have drawn significant attention, particularly given his history as a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni. Besigye, aged 70, has faced numerous legal challenges and has been a central figure in Uganda's political landscape for years. His recent courtroom incident occurred amidst ongoing tensions, as he was protesting against the trial proceedings that have seen his main lawyer, Erias Lukwago, also detained and charged. Witnesses reported that before collapsing, Besigye expressed distress, claiming he was being harmed. Ingrid Turinawe, a close associate of Besigye, revealed that access to him at the hospital has been restricted, raising further concerns about his well-being. She noted that while Besigye's personal doctor was eventually allowed to see him, the lack of communication and access has left supporters anxious about his condition.
