Bihar Students Protest for Better School Facilities Following UP Demonstrations

In a striking demonstration of youth activism, students from Simuara Middle School in the Gaya district of Bihar organized a protest on Tuesday, advocating for essential improvements in their school's infrastructure and facilities. Approximately 40 to 50 students from grades six to eight undertook a four-kilometer trek to the Tikari Sub-Divisional Office, where they voiced their grievances regarding the inadequate conditions that hinder their educational experience and daily lives. The protest gained significant traction after a video depicting the students sitting outside the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's (SDM) office circulated widely on social media, capturing the attention of the public and authorities alike. The students firmly stated they would not leave until their concerns were addressed, highlighting critical issues such as the quality of the mid-day meal, availability of drinking water, sanitation facilities, electricity supply, and the overall state of the school environment.

In response to the students' protest, Tikari SDM Praveen Kundan took immediate action by establishing a three-member inquiry committee tasked with investigating the raised complaints. This committee, which includes representatives from the district supply department, Nagar Panchayat, and block administration, conducted an inspection of the school and was instructed to prepare a report detailing their findings. The students primarily emphasized the need for basic amenities and improvements in school infrastructure. Following the inspection, the headmaster received a warning and was ordered to rectify the highlighted issues within a strict timeframe of four to five days. Education officials later conducted an unannounced visit to the school, where they directed the administration to enhance cleanliness, repair classrooms and toilets, improve the quality of mid-day meals, complete necessary electrical work, install fans, adhere to the class timetable, and maintain comprehensive lesson plans.
