Kerala Advances Implementation of PM SHRI Schools Initiative

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala has confirmed its commitment to advancing the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) initiative, a significant educational reform aimed at enhancing the quality of schooling across the state. This decision comes in light of the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) administration's establishment of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the central government, which obligates the current government to continue with the project. According to reports from Indian Express, the UDF's move is not merely a gesture of goodwill towards the Centre but a strategic step to secure the necessary funding allocated for the initiative. Adoor Prakash, a Congress Member of Parliament, indicated that a dedicated sub-committee will be tasked with identifying and finalizing the schools that will participate in this transformative program.

The PM SHRI initiative, which was launched by the Union government in 2022, aims to revamp existing educational institutions throughout the country by enhancing their infrastructure, teaching methodologies, and digital learning capabilities. The program is designed to elevate approximately 14,500 schools nationwide to the status of “exemplary schools,” aligning them with the principles set forth in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This initiative encompasses a wide range of educational institutions, including those affiliated with state boards, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Navodaya Vidyalayas. The overarching goal of PM SHRI is to foster an educational environment that prioritizes quality learning through modern facilities, innovative pedagogical approaches, and a holistic focus on student development.

A distinctive aspect of the PM SHRI scheme is the collaboration between the central and state governments, formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement allows selected schools to benefit from central support for various enhancements, including the establishment of smart classrooms, upgraded laboratories, improved learning resources, and comprehensive teacher training programs, alongside initiatives aimed at promoting environmentally friendly practices in schools. While the Centre provides essential financial and technical backing, the day-to-day management of the schools remains under the jurisdiction of state governments. The anticipated outcomes of the PM SHRI initiative include not only improved educational results and increased access to digital resources but also the development of teachers' skills and a heightened emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, vocational training, and essential life skills among students. Furthermore, these schools are expected to serve as exemplary models, showcasing effective educational practices that can be emulated by other institutions across the region.
