Devotee Dies from Suffocation During Puri's Bahuda Yatra Amid Safety Concerns

A tragic incident occurred during the Bahuda Yatra, the return procession of Lord Jagannath in Puri, Odisha, where a 57-year-old devotee named Abhiram Das lost his life due to suffocation amidst a massive crowd. This annual religious event attracted over five lakh participants, leading to heightened concerns regarding crowd safety during large pilgrimages. Reports indicate that more than 100 individuals experienced health issues or injuries during the event, underscoring the potential dangers associated with such gatherings.

Abhiram Das reportedly collapsed while he was engaged in pulling the chariot of Devi Subhadra near Bagala Dharmashala. Emergency services were promptly alerted, and he was taken to a nearby first-aid center before being transferred to the Puri district headquarters hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Preliminary investigations revealed that Das had a history of high blood pressure, and his body will be returned to his family following a post-mortem examination. The incident has sparked discussions about the risks of suffocation in crowded settings, particularly during religious events where large numbers of devotees congregate.
