Asian stock markets experienced a significant upswing on Friday, buoyed by a strong performance on Wall Street and a remarkable rebound in South Korea's financial landscape. The Kospi index surged by an impressive 14% shortly after the market opened, recovering from substantial losses earlier in the week. This resurgence has sparked renewed hope among investors that the recent downturn in AI-related assets may be stabilizing. Meanwhile, Japan's Nikkei index also saw a notable increase of 5%, contributing to a broader positive sentiment across the region. The MSCI index, which tracks shares in the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan, rose by 3%, reflecting a collective recovery in investor confidence. The upward momentum was largely fueled by robust earnings reports from major tech companies like Microsoft and Amazon, which alleviated concerns regarding capital expenditures and provided a much-needed boost to chip manufacturers and related sectors. Fabien Yip, a market analyst at IG, noted that both earnings and overall market sentiment appeared to be recovering after what he described as an exaggerated market reaction earlier in the week. He emphasized that the demand for AI technologies remains strong and sustainable, suggesting that the recent selloff may have been an overreaction to fears surrounding capital spending. Despite this encouraging turnaround, it is important to note that the Kospi is still projected to end July with a staggering 24% loss, marking its most significant monthly decline since 1997. This volatility has prompted South Korean regulators to take measures to limit leveraged trading products that have contributed to market instability and adversely affected retail investors' savings. Ji Young Park, a senior equity portfolio manager at Amundi, expressed concerns about the fragility of market sentiment, particularly in relation to the ongoing discussions surrounding AI. She pointed out that the performance of markets in Asia, excluding Japan, has been narrowly focused on AI-related stocks, and after the sharp corrections seen in these markets, there is a belief that the prolonged volatility may be nearing its conclusion. As the trading day progressed, Nasdaq futures climbed by 0.87%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.29%. European markets also reflected this positive trend, with EUROSTOXX 50 futures rising by 0.57% and both FTSE and DAX futures increasing by 0.4%. In currency markets, the Japanese yen was under scrutiny, trading 0.6% lower at 160.51 per dollar, following a significant 2.4% increase the previous day after Japan's intervention in the foreign exchange market. Additionally, South Korea's foreign exchange authorities engaged in dollar-selling interventions, indicating a coordinated effort to stabilize the yen. Vishnu Varathan, head of APAC macro strategy at Mizuho, commented on the sharp fluctuations in the USD/JPY exchange rate, noting that the timing of these moves was likely a preemptive measure ahead of the Bank of Japan's meeting. The dollar's weakness, in turn, supported the euro, which hovered near a one-month high at $1.1518, while the British pound traded at $1.3456, maintaining most of its previous gains. In the commodities market, oil prices saw a slight uptick amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with Brent crude futures rising by 0.4% to $89.38 per barrel and U.S. crude increasing by 0.3% to $83.84 per barrel. A recent drone strike on gas vessels in Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta has raised concerns about potential disruptions to navigation through the Suez Canal, a critical route for Saudi oil exports. Despite the escalating conflict, Rodrigo Catril, a senior FX strategist at National Australia Bank, noted that energy prices did not react with panic, indicating a measured market response to the situation. Meanwhile, spot gold prices dipped by 0.2% to $4,094.28 an ounce, reflecting the broader market dynamics.
