India Launches First Vande Bharat Freight EMU for Cargo Transport

In a groundbreaking move towards enhancing its freight railway capabilities, Indian Railways has successfully conducted the inaugural technical trials of the country's first Vande Bharat platform-based Freight Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) at the Kota Division in Rajasthan. This innovative 16-coach prototype, crafted by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) based in Chennai, achieved an impressive top speed of 145 km/h during its first day of testing, marking a significant advancement in the modernization of freight services across India. The trials are part of a broader initiative aimed at introducing faster, more efficient, and technologically advanced freight transportation solutions throughout the nation.

The testing is being overseen by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) along the high-speed corridor connecting Kota, Nagda, and Sawai Madhopur, which is recognized as one of the most sophisticated testing routes in the Indian Railways network. On the initial day of the trials, the freight EMU departed from Kota at 6:00 AM en route to Mahidpur Road. The first phase of testing involved non-recorded speeds of 120 km/h, followed by recorded speeds of 120 km/h and 135 km/h on the stretch between Mahidpur Road and Bhawani Mandi. The highlight of the day was the return journey to Kota, where the freight EMU reached its peak speed of 145 km/h, establishing a new benchmark for the program.
