Ajinkya Rahane's Leadership Compared to Kargil War by Former Coach

Ajinkya Rahane's career has been marked by his ability to excel under pressure, a trait that has been highlighted by his former coach, Pravin Amre. Amre commended Rahane's leadership skills and resilience during India's remarkable tour of Australia in 2020-2021. Rahane, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, leaves behind a legacy that includes 85 Test matches, 90 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 20 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), all accumulated over a span of more than a decade since his debut in 2011.

Reflecting on Rahane's pivotal role in the Australian series, Amre recalled the challenging circumstances that surrounded the team after they were bowled out for a mere 36 runs in the Adelaide Test. He emphasized how Rahane's performance in the subsequent matches, particularly his innings in Melbourne, showcased his exceptional batting and leadership abilities. Amre noted, "We know like what he did in Australia with that particular innings in Melbourne when the team was bowled out for 36 previously. From there, picking the team, performing, leading from the front and getting that hundred… I think that is the art of batsmanship and also the art of leadership on how to play, where morally the team was down and from there, beating the mighty Australians in their own soil." This moment was a testament to Rahane's character and his capacity to inspire his teammates during dire situations.

Amre fondly recalled Rahane's early days in cricket, including his First-Class debut, where he made a significant impression by scoring a century against Karachi Urban. He remarked on the importance of that initial performance, stating, "It was a special his debut was in Pakistan where he got his hundred in the first game, that’s where he showed the spark, representing Mumbai and getting hundred in a first game." Among Rahane's notable achievements, Amre highlighted his impressive innings at Lord's during India's 2014 tour of England, which was crucial for the team's success. However, it was during the 2020-2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy that Rahane's leadership truly shone, guiding a weakened Indian squad to a historic 2-1 series victory in Australia. Amre drew parallels between this achievement and India's resilience during the Kargil war, stating, "I personally feel like it was exactly like the Kargil moment, because the opponent were on the top, they (Indian team) were down and from there they went (on to) winning the series." This comparison underscores the significance of Rahane's leadership in overcoming adversity, solidifying his status as a key figure in Indian cricket history.
