Sixty Palestinians Released from Israeli Detention Describe Harrowing Experiences

A group of sixty Palestinians who had been detained by Israeli authorities has returned to Gaza, arriving at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. Their condition was alarming, as many appeared frail and injured, with some unable to walk. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated their transfer, and upon arrival, they were met by anxious relatives and medical personnel eager to provide assistance. This release marks the largest since the initial phase of the ceasefire that was established in October during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. According to the Israeli rights organization HaMoked, these individuals were part of a larger group of nearly 1,300 people from Gaza categorized by Israel as “unlawful combatants.” The Israeli government stated that these men were released after it was determined through interrogations that they no longer posed a security threat.

Moath al-Kahlout, a reporter for Al Jazeera, provided insights from Gaza, noting that many of the detainees were laborers in areas under Israeli occupation prior to the escalation of violence that began on October 7, 2023. The situation in Gaza has worsened significantly due to the ongoing blockade, making it increasingly difficult for these men to find food and adequate shelter, which will undoubtedly hinder their recovery process. Among those released was Abdullah Kilani, who recounted his capture on Salah al-Din Street in central Gaza in December 2024. He spent over 18 months in detention, during which he and another inmate were shot. Kilani described the conditions as extremely harsh, expressing disbelief at his newfound freedom.
