Amnesty International Critiques Violence in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir Amid Protests

In recent days, protests have surged in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), leading to a tragic loss of life as over 30 individuals have reportedly been killed due to gunfire from Pakistani Rangers within a short span of just 48 hours. This alarming situation has prompted the Pakistani government to impose an internet blackout in the region, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Amnesty International USA. The organization has condemned the excessive use of force against demonstrators, labeling it as unlawful. Notably, these protests coincided with the controversial legislative assembly elections in the area, further intensifying the unrest. Amnesty International has highlighted that the disturbing incidents reported from Rawalakot align with Pakistan's troubling history of employing unlawful violence against protesters in PoK. The human rights group has called for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the actions of security forces during these protests, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice.

Amnesty International's statement underscored the urgency of restoring communication services in the region, citing that the ongoing blackout severely hampers the ability to independently verify the situation on the ground. The organization has urged Pakistani authorities to lift the restrictions on internet and mobile services, allowing media access and independent observers to assess the unfolding events. The statement also pointed out that the tensions surrounding the elections have been exacerbated by the unlawful prohibition of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). This protest movement has faced significant repression, with Amnesty International urging the Pakistani government to cease using anti-terrorism laws as a means to silence dissent and arbitrarily detain JAAC members and their supporters. The organization firmly stated that the ban should not serve as a justification for the violent suppression of peaceful protests.
