India's Cyber Crime Unit Orders GitHub to Block BitChat Repositories

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, known as I4C, which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has recently taken significant action by instructing GitHub to disable access to three specific repositories associated with BitChat. This application, recognized as an open-source messaging platform, is designed to function offline by utilizing Bluetooth mesh networks. The decision to block these repositories stems from concerns regarding potential security vulnerabilities and the implications of decentralized communication methods in sensitive situations.

The directive issued to GitHub was grounded in legal provisions outlined in Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act of 2000, in conjunction with Rule 3(1)(d) of the IT Rules established in 2021. GitHub was mandated to implement the takedown of the specified repositories within a strict timeframe of three hours following the receipt of the notice. This swift action underscores the urgency with which the I4C is addressing the perceived risks associated with the use of BitChat, particularly in light of ongoing investigations into its potential role in recent public demonstrations.
