Nepal's Prime Minister Calls for Peace After Deadly Clashes

In a significant address to the nation, Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has urged citizens to remain calm following violent clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. This marked Shah's first public statement since assuming office in March, during which he emphasized the importance of unity and peace in the face of unrest. His appeal comes in the wake of escalating tensions in the southern region of Nepal, particularly in the Sunsari district, where the violence erupted over a dispute related to a Hindu procession. Shah's call for restraint was directed not only at the general populace but also at civil society, religious leaders, and political parties, highlighting the need for collective efforts to restore harmony in the community.

The unrest began on a Sunday in a village close to the Indian border, ignited by disagreements between Hindu and Muslim residents regarding loud music and the display of religious flags during a Hindu celebration. The situation escalated quickly, leading to police intervention. Reports indicate that law enforcement officials opened fire to disperse the crowds, resulting in the deaths of two men. A third individual succumbed to injuries during a protest in the Siraha district, despite a curfew being enforced to mitigate further violence. In response to the unrest, authorities have imposed curfews across Sunsari and adjacent districts to prevent additional clashes and maintain public order. Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle confirmed that law enforcement is on high alert, working diligently to protect public property and ensure minimal use of force while restoring order.
